After having the battery on my "summer only" convertible go flat last winter I decided to invest in a battery maintainer. The Schumacher SEM-1652A was the best compromise of price (around $40 with shipping), features (a normal charging rate, and a lower maintaining rate, with overcharge protection and indicator lights), and small size (fits easily under the hood by the master cylinder, battery wiring adaptor with quick connect makes installation and removal a snap. I'd add a few extra crimp-on terminals of various ring sizes to the kit, so different power connections with the wiring adaptor could be made (my car has the battery mounted in the front fender well, I had to get larger ring terminals to go on the remote jump starting terminals under the hood.

bought a wattmeter to measure the power use of a fridge ( seemed to be running more than normal, we replaced it with an energy star rated model ) so I hooked up the Schumacher maintainer to the meter to see what it drew when it was trickle charging / maintaining. Charging was .25 amps or about 30 watts per hour, and maintaining was .11 amps or about 13 watts per hour. Pretty low energy use in my book.

until recently researching what a good battery charger should do.
Slow Battery Charger
1) this charger only delivers a max of 1.5A. This
means if you try to charge a discharged auto battery (48AH) it will take
a long long time. This charger does work great for topping off a car
battery at 70% (12.4V).
2) The instructions included clearly
state the charger will automatically shut-off after 12 hours of
charging. The charger will restart and continue charging if you unplug
and then plug the charger in again. Best to get a higher capacity
charger.

3) This charger does have a float mode sort of.
Actually it shuts off the charging current and monitors battery voltage.
When the battery voltage drops low enough the charger cycles on to top
it off and then shuts off again.
MY SUMMARY 1st: I like this
charger and think it does a good job for the PRICE. Gold box special was
$15.20 + tax. (I would definitely buy it at the regular price for $3$) It's
basically automatic. Don't have to set the voltage and it won't damage
anything if you reverse the clips accidently. Compact size and
reasonable quality clamps. This charger does what it is designed for.
That is charge small batteries and top off larger automotive batteries.
This is an excellent maintenance charger for all batteries to keep them
fully charged when not in use. (My opinion) Personally I would not leave any charger connected to my battery for more than 24 hours

One of the most interesting projects for both solar energy and do-it-yourself enthusiasts is learning how to build a solar powered battery charger. It seems to be like a project within a project. Solar powered appliances rely on solar panels which act as a form of battery, storing electrical energy to later run appliances. To make a solar powered battery, then, is like building a battery within a battery. And while solar battery chargers are readily available for purchase in the market, building a homemade DIY solar powered battery charger can still prove to be more cost-efficient.
You will need solar cells for this project. Other materials are gauge wire, duct tape, soldering iron, a window frame, cardboard, blocking diode, a battery holder, and a multimeter.

Wire the cells by soldering them from the back and then the next one to the front, and so on. The solar cells must be wired in parallel in order for the amps to be increased. 1) First, remove the battery cables from the terminal posts. Remember to remove the (-) negative cable first. (This cable is usually black) and then the (+) positive cable. Don't forget that all your stereo settings will probably be lost when the power is cut off.
2) Now you are ready to hook up the car battery charger to your car. But first, read the owner's manual and insure that the model charger you are using is suitable for your car. Now, hook the (+) positive cable (red) to the positive terminal and then the (-) negative cable (black) to the negative terminal.

4) Wait for another indicator to come on to show that the charge is complete. Remove the cables starting with the (-) negative cable (black) first and reconnect your battery.

Craftsman NEXTEC Cordless Tools: Real Power Tools or Just Toys?
In this article I am going to give you my quick review of all the NEXTEC tools available now. Craftsman just announced that they are greatly expanding the Craftsman NEXTEC 12 volt Cordless power tools in May 2011 so this is a good time to go over the entire line. The Craftsman NEXTEC QuickBoost Charger will hit shelves in May 2011 and will be followed shortly by a NEXTEC 12-volt 3-in-1 garden tool, string trimmer, hedge trimmer, vacuum, digital inflater, work light and second generation "Hammerhead" Auto Hammer.
I like tools. I like "Tim the Toolman Taylor" Tools. Bigger is better! More Power! Oo-OoO! So when Craftsman sent me the NEXTEC Cordless 12 volt Power Tools last spring I used them, wrote a couple of articles on these cute little tools and then promptly put them down in my basement workshop. They were nice, lightweight tools. They had plenty of power, but I still went back to my "big" tools. I basically forgot about them.
Then, I went into my local Sears around Thanksgiving and I saw customers literally buying the NEXTEC Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver as fast as the store personnel could put them out. What was really strange to me is these NEXTEC 12 volt drills were flying off the shelves, but no one was buying the DeWalt DCD710 12V MAX lithium drill from the display right along side the NEXTEC's. I knew is was a nice little drill, but I didn't think everyone else liked it that much. The same thing was happening with the Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0 Volt Right Angle Impact Driver was selling well but no one was buying the Dewalt DCF815 12V MAX 1/4 impact driver right next to it.
During the winter I move into a room in the basement. It's small, only 10 X 10 ft so I don't have room for a lot of stuff. My router, a workbench with a wood vise, a few hand tools and a set-up table. There is no room for my table saw, miter saw, jointer and drill press. I end up cutting my wood out in the unheated garage, bringing it downstairs, fitting it up, going back out in the garage to drill the holes or joint an edge, back down stairs......you get the picture.
Well, while I was getting the room ready for the winter I found the NEXTEC tools and decided to take a good hard look at them again.
I decided that I would use these tools exclusively in my downstairs workshop this winter.
What I like:
Weight. The NEXTEC tools weigh only half of even my lightest cordless drill.
Size. Easy to handle even for small hands. Don't feel too small like the little cordless screwdrivers for big hands
Power. Have as much power as the old 15.6 tools and I think a lot more power than the old 7.2, 9.6, 10.8 and 14.4 tools. More power than the C3 19.2 volt Model 17191
In the rest of this article I will give quick review of each tool:
Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0V Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver Model 17586 What I like: It costs less than half of DeWalt DCD710 12V MAX Drill. It weighs less at only 2.2 lbs. with the 12.0 Volt Lithium-Ion battery. It will fit in your hand and easily slip into the pocket of your work apron. This is the most powerful drill on the market for the weight. It has 195 in.-lbs. of Torque which is plenty for most of the tasks around your home. It has a 2-Speed Gearbox and a 3/8-Inch Single Sleeve Keyless Chuck. A lot of guys thin they need a 1/2 inch chuck, but if you look at the wall at your nearest hardware store 95% of the drill bits and screwdriving bits will fit in this drill. 18 Position Adjustable Torque Clutch. Integrated LED Work Light. 30-Minute Quick Charger What I don't like: I really like this drill and about the only thing I would put on it would be a battery charge indicator. It would be nice to know when the battery is about to run out.
Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0 Volt Right Angle Impact Driver Model 17562 What I like: Even though Sears states this has only 700 in lbs of torque a bunch of us feel it has as much power as the Dewalt DCF815 12V MAX 1/4 impact driver for a lot less money. We also liked the right angle drive. It will get into places the other drills can't. What I don't like: The right angle takes a little practice to get used to. When you first use it...use both hands until you get the feel for the impact driver. After that you will enjoy using it.
Craftsman 17428 Nextec 12-volt Cordless Compact 1/4'' Impact Driver Model 17428 What I like: Same weight and feel as the Model 17586 Drill/Driver. What I don't like: Could use a battery meter.
12-volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool Model 17438 What I like: Multi-tools are quickly becoming the go-to tool for cutting, sanding, grout removal and scraping. This lightweight tool can easily do the work of a trim saw, jamb saw, drywall saw, detail sander, rotary grout tool, carbide cutter and paint scraper. The Craftsman NEXTEC is one of the lightest of the bunch and it will accept the Fein attachments. This gives it the most versatility of all the mulit-tools out there. It has plenty of power to do all these tasks around the home. The batteries last about 20 minutes during continuous use, charge in 30 minutes and you can get a second battery if you need one for less than . What I don't like: Eventually I would like to see quick release blade changing. It only takes 30 seconds to change the tool now, but I want to do it faster!
NEXTEC 12-volt Lithium-Ion Hammerhead Auto Hammer Model 11818 What I like: I don't use nails very often anymore. I use screws for most of my woodworking tasks, but the other day I put a few more lights in the basement and the Hammerhead was the right tools to nail the outlet boxes into the rafters. It only took 30 seconds to nail the box into the beam and NO BENT NAILS! What I don't like: Craftsman is coming out with a new version of this about May 2011. I will wait to give you my viewpoint then.
Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0V Lithium-Ion True Finish™ Sander Model 61326 What I like: This is a "Mouse" size sander but it has two big advantages over all the other sanders like it on the market. One, it is cordless! The battery lasts a long, long time. Two, It doesn't make your hand go numb! The built in counter balancer cancels out the hand numbing vibration you are used to. What I don't like: NO ONE knows about this sander! It comes in one kit and you can get the "bare" tool online but very few people realize how nice this sander is.
Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0V Lithium-Ion Circular Saw Model 61325 What I like: This is the one tool in the NEXTEC line that I really don't like. It has enough power to cut even hard maple, but the design is all wrong. The base plate "shoe" is too big for the saw, The saw mark on the shoe is too far away from the blade. It doesn't have a laser guide, the light is in the wrong place, the blades are too thick and there is not enough of a selection of blade styles. What I don't like: Oops, I already told you what I don't like.
Craftsman 14299 Nextec 12-volt Cordless Multi-Saw Model 14299 What I like: I use this saw a lot for the size, power, and versatility. It has a lot of power for the size and is really handy for those quick cuts. It uses standard jig saw blades which come in all sizes and styles. What I don't like: It doesn't have a "blower" to keep the sawdust away from your cut line.
Craftsman NEXTEC 12 volt LED Worklight Model 14298 What I like: This is a great work light and flashlight for the house. It will run continuously for hours on one battery and the battery stays charged for over a year if you don't use it. The head swivels for under the sink work and it stands up all by itself. What I don't like: My wife saw it, and immediately stole it to put on her nightstand! Now if it only came in decorator colors!
Craftsman 12 Volt Nextec Compact Lithium-Ion battery Model 11221 What I like: You can buy additional batteries for less than . A lot of power for the size. (as much as your old 14.4 batteries) Will hold a charge for up to a year. With the new charger Craftsman just announced will recharge to 25% in less than 3 minutes. What I don't like: I would like a little clip so I can hang a spare on my belt.
Summary: The Craftsman NEXTEC 12 volt Cordless power tools are great for homeowners. They are lightweight, strong and easy on the wallet to buy. They work surprisingly well for the size and cost a lot less than other brands. I highly recommend these tools.

Powermat - How Does the Powermat Wireless Charger Work?
PowerMat is an exciting new wireless charging technology. It was first demonstrated in 2008 and early 2009 and is now available to buy for the home and office.
So what is PowerMat? It is a small device that uses wireless charging to charge your most important gadgets like cellphones (including the iPhone and Blackberry), video games (including the Nintendo DS), and iPod without you having to connect them to a charger or plug them into the wall. The PowerMat itself is, of course, plugged into the wall and connected to mains electricity by a wire, but from then on everything is wireless. You drop your device onto the PowerMat and it gets charged wirelessly, without you having to do anything.
So how does PowerMat wireless charging work?
The technology behind PowerMat is known as 'electromagnetic induction' (or just 'magnetic induction'). Michael Faraday is generally credited with the discovery of the induction phenomenon in 1831 though others were working in the same field at the time.
This electromagnetic induction is officially defined as "the production of voltage across a conductor situated in a changing magnetic field or a conductor moving through a stationary magnetic field" but that does not mean very much to most people. A better way to put it is that it is a means to transfer electrical power using a shared magnetic field.
Consider this arrangement:
1. Put electrical power into a coil of wire
2. This will produce a magnetic field around the coil that affects any metal within the field (as demonstrated by Faraday)
3. Change the field quickly over time and an electric current will be generated in the metal

What is a Backup Sump Pump?
A backup sump pump is another pump that is installed to operate should the primary sump pump fail. Surprisingly enough there are many reasons a primary pump may fail including: electrical power outage, float or switch failure, broken impeller or drive shaft, clogged intake screen.
What Factors Should Be Reviewed?
There are eleven major factors to consider when comparing backup sump pumps: power source, charger strength, trigger, dependability, material used in construction, operational capability, dimensions, size of discharge, protection against solids or sludge, alarm notification, and manufacturer warranty.
1. Power Source
The backup system installed should be sourced by something other than electricity.
What are the different types of power sources used?
A Battery provides the power to enable a backup sump pump plugged into it through the use of a wired housing case to perform the pumping cycle for the removal of the water from the pit. Twelve or twenty four volt battery power is used. The voltage and type of battery required varies by manufacturer.
Water Pressure provides the power to keep a backup sump pump running. The water used must come from a municipal source and have a pressure between 40 and 100 PSI (pounds per square inch).
A portable generator provides power through the conversion of gas or propane into energy. The pump must be plugged into the generator.
Automatic start standby generator provides the power when the sump pump is plugged into it.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different power sources?
Batteries require monitoring to make sure they are operational in the time of need. Most backup systems have an alarm that lets the owner know when a battery requires maintenance or replacement and is being used by the backup pump. Batteries are rechargeable.
Water power requires no batteries and has no moving parts. Operation of watered power systems requires a PSI water pressure between 40 and 100 PSI (pounds per square inch). Private well water cannot be used and the municipal provided water must have reliable water pressure. It takes 1 gallon of municipal water to remove 2 gallons of sump pit water so can be costly to operate.
Portable generator: The generator must be placed outside. It must be started manually. Most operate from propane tank.
Automatic start standby generator: They are expensive to purchase and install (four to ten times more expensive than battery power) but are very reliable. This type of generator runs off of natural gas or propane tanks and can provide power to multiple household appliances during power failure.
2. Charger Strength
This term applies when batteries are used as the source of power.
The higher the charger strength the faster the battery will be recharged after usage.
Charger strength varies from.4 to 20.
3. Trigger
Each backup system has a trigger that activates the non electrical power source to begin operation.
What are the different triggers?
For battery powered backup sump pumps, when the water level raises the float, the battery is activated into operation.
For water powered backup sump pumps, when the float raises, a valve allows pressured water to flow down to the pump. The flowing of the pressured water activates the backup system into operation.
An automatic start standby generator is activated when the transfer switch senses a utility power interruption.
A portable generator becomes operational when a human starts it.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each trigger?
The transfer switch for the standby generator is the most reliable and quickest way to activate the operation of a backup system. The backup pump is operational as soon as the power goes out.
Battery and water powered systems are not activated until the water rises to the height of the float. That means water has already collected in the pit.
4. Dependability
Batteries deplete and loose charge.
Municipal water pressure is not constant. A drop below 40 PSI means the backup system is not operational.
The float-switch mechanism, impeller or clogging of the backup sump pump plugged into a battery or standby generator source of power could fail.
The tether switch is not as dependable as the vertical switch.
Dual vertical switches offer twice the reliability.
5. Materials Used in the Construction of Backup Sump Pumps
What are the different materials used?
Thermoplastic: Outer casing is made of a hard, durable plastic.
Cast Iron and Stainless Steel: The outer casing and bolts are made of metal.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different materials?
Plastic weighs less and is cheaper.
Cast iron and stainless steel lasts a lifetime, weighs more and is constructed to handle heavy duty usage. This material is more expensive.
6. Operational Capacity
What are the volumes at which backup pumps can discharge water?
Pumping capacity is measured by number of gallons per minute or hour at a specific rise.
Capacity is determined by size of motor and source of power.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of operational capacity?
Larger motors using battery or generator power move more water during operation.
Smaller motors move less water during operation and require less battery or generator power.
The amount of water moved during operation of a water powered backup sump pump is determined by the municipal water pressure. The greater the pressure the greater volume of water that is discharged. Generally water powered pumps have a lower operational capacity.
7. Dimensions of Backup Sump Pump and Pit
Each backup sump pump has unique measurements.
A sump pit with an 18"diameter basin or larger provides the greatest flexibility in being able to fit a primary and a backup sump pump into the pit.
A tether float requires a larger diameter-based pit than a vertical float.
8. Size of Discharge Port Diameter
What are the different sizes?
The size is either 1 ¼ or 1 ½ inches in diameter.
Most backup pumps have an adapter to accommodate either size of PVC piping.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different sizes?
The capability to adapt to either a 1 ¼ or 1 ½ inch size PVC pipe is extremely beneficial.
A size of 1 ½ inches is required to handle heavy volumes of water.
9. Protection against Debris, Sludge, or Spherical Solids
Backup pumps use screens to protect against particles.
Those with the additional protection of float cages are built so the cage bottom concaves causing particles to run off.
10. Alarm notification
Each of the battery backup sump pump systems have audible alarms that sound when the battery is activated when backup sump system is running. The alarm also sounds when the battery is discharged.
The Basement Watchdog Backup series also has an audible alarm when the battery fluid levels are low.
11. Manufacturer Warranty
What manufacturer warranties exist?
Some have no warranty
Others have one, two or three years
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a warranty?
No warranty may mean manufactures are very confident of product quality.
The purchase price of the pump may be higher because the cost of warranty is included.
Limited warranties will not pay the entire cost to fix or replace.
The length of warranty is usually based on the length of time most of the pumps like it are known to operate without failure.
How Can You Determine Which Backup Sump Pump System Is Best for You?

Are you concerned about other household circuits, experience electricity failure frequently and for long periods of time, and have no ordinance limitations regarding the placement of a 48" (L) x 25" (W) x 29" (H) box outside your home?
The automatic start standby generator can provide the most reliable power for a backup sump pump system as well as other household items.
Is your water provided from municipal water source and it is reasonably priced?
Water powered backup systems only work with municipal water source not private well sources.
It takes 1 gallon of municipal water to pump out 2 gallons of sump pit water.
Are you concerned about backup sump pump float-switch failure during operation?
The Watchdog Big Boy, Watchdog Special and Watchdog Emergency Backup systems have a vertical dual float switch. If one float-switch fails the second one begins operation. The float-switch mechanism can also be replaced without removing the backup pump from the pit.
Wayne, Little Giant and Zoeller use vertical switches which are more reliable than the tether floats used by Simer Ace in the Hole and Flotec.
Are you concerned with time required to recharge the battery after usage?
The Watchdog Big Dog provides the quickest recharging. It has a 20 amp charger.

You just got your new Kindle and have loaded it up with e-books and audio books. After playing a while you decide to make a few phone calls. When you come back, you find your Kindle screen is frozen! Unresponsive. The Next Page and Previous Page buttons don't work. The (Aaa) doesn't "wake it up." Nothing seems to bring your Kindle back to life. That old-school screen saver just stares back at you.
First of all - don't panic. As with any other electronic device, the Kindle occasionally has a few hiccups. There are a few things you can do to get your Kindle running again good as new.
1. Plug-in your charger. Sometimes the Kindle battery can get run-down enough so that it will "freeze." Plugging the charger in and giving your Kindle battery some much needed power often will un-freeze the screen.
2. If that doesn't work, try what is called a "soft reset." To do a soft reset on your Kindle press the , , and keys simultaneously. Your Kindle screen should go blank or dark and then slowly come back to life.
3. When doing a soft reset doesn't work, you will occasionally have to do a "hard reset." To do a hard reset -
- Make sure your Kindle's battery is charged (about an hour of charging time should do it)
- Remove the charger cord from your Kindle
- Open the back of your Kindle
- Locate the small hole under the word "Reset"
- Open a small paper clip
- Insert the paper clip end into the hole and press GENTLY for about 10 seconds
- Your Kindle screen should go blank (or black) and then the Kindle should re-start
4. When a hard reset doesn't work you can try to remove and replace the battery in your Kindle. This is a bit more complex but not too difficult -
- Turn your Kindle off
- Remove the charger cord from your Kindle
- Open the back of your Kindle
- Locate the gray battery, and the finger-notch for removing the battery
- Gently press the battery toward the back of its compartment, then lift the battery out
- Locate the connector that attaches the battery to the Kindle
- GENTLY pull the battery connector out of the Kindle
- With the battery out of the Kindle turn it on for about 5 seconds
- Replace the battery and close the back cover of your Kindle
- Turn the Kindle on
If your Kindle is still "frozen" after completing the steps above, your next move is to contact the Amazon Kindle support team. Go to your Amazon account page - select "Manage my Kindle" and contact the support team from there. You can find the link at the top of the "Manage my Kindle" page on the far right side.
There is a good chance, however, that the steps above will get your Kindle un-frozen and by now you'll be back enjoying your favorite e-book or audio book.
